The Portable Dual-manual Hammond for the Organ-focused Keyboardist

At Sweetwater, the name Hammond commands respect. It’s synonymous with the classic tonewheel organs such as the B3 that played an outsized role in the music revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. In the digital era, Hammond assumed a leadership role in developing cutting-edge “clonewheel” organs that deliver those legendary organ sounds, along with all the other essential keyboard instruments you need for any gig or recording session. The SKX Pro is a portable dual-manual instrument that represents the latest generation of organ-focused, do-it-all keyboards from Hammond. Loaded with higher-resolution samples than previous SKX series instruments and equipped with four robust sound engines that can be deployed individually or in any combination, the Hammond SKX Pro ups the ante for breathtaking sonic realism.

Definitive drawbar organs

As a genuine Hammond, the SKX Pro is, of course, going to have the state-of-the-art in authentic organ sounds. These come courtesy of its newly developed drawbar organ section, which is derived from Hammond’s flagship XK-5. The SKX Pro’s industry-standard Hammond tone is produced by the powerful modeled tone wheel 1 (MTW1) sound engine, complemented by a special system that emulates the matching transformer of a vintage Hammond. Plus, a newly developed virtual multi-contact function replicates the keyboard performance of those coveted models. This modern technology closely follows Hammond’s original design, but it’s executed in the digital realm while still providing all the unique sonic characteristics and imperfections that have come to define the classic Hammond sound. In the factory, the SKX Pro is set to the same tolerances the B-3 was during its production run, but digital controls — including the touch-response percussion found on vintage Hammonds — allow you to sculpt nearly every aspect of your sound.

Next-generation digital Leslie

The SKX Pro houses Hammond’s next-generation onboard digital Leslie, which features deeper authenticity, including rotor airflow, to faithfully reproduce the Leslie cabinet’s unique tone and 3-dimensional swirling effect. A new tube modeling system provides characteristic tube warmth and gritty growl when driven hard.

Classic transistor combos and pipe organs

Beyond the tonewheel, Hammond’s wave composition system adds vintage Italian, British, and Japanese transistor combo organ voices, which have come back into vogue in a big way. In addition, the SKX Pro offers a full range of pipe organ voices — including a brand-new selection of theater pipe organs. No matter the genre, the SKX Pro is ready to ace the gig.

The piano/ensemble engine

The SKX Pro also features an improved piano/ensemble engine with a wide variety of keyboard and other instruments, including acoustic and electric pianos, brass, reeds, strings, choirs, and percussion. The high-resolution samples of the world’s leading acoustic grand pianos are noteworthy, particularly the stunning new “S” sample of a legendary European concert grand. And for the first time in an SK series keyboard, all piano/ensemble voices can be fully edited. Sample choice, EG (envelope generator), Filter, LFO, and other parameters are now under your control and can be saved in a patch. A total of 162 high-definition digital voices (with upgraded resolution compared to previous SK models) provide a broad variety of tonal possibilities. All voices (many new to the SK line) have been carefully curated for their usefulness in real-world musical settings. Onstage, you’ll appreciate the 12 category buttons that allow effortless, instantaneous sound selection, and Hammond’s proprietary ProChord feature (available on many voices) that lets you produce complex harmonies by playing a single-note melody while playing chords with your left hand.

The mono synth engine

The SK Pro packs a beastly physical-modeling synthesizer that faithfully reproduces the sounds of classic analog mono synthesizers. The mono synth engine offers six different oscillator configurations, as well as controls for filter and amplitude, allowing you to create and tweak your sounds in real time, just as on a vintage analog synth.

Powerful onboard DSP effects

The SKX Pro is equipped with a powerful onboard DSP fffects engine. Each of the SKX Pro’s four voice sections can be assigned overdrive and two types of comprehensive DSP multi-effects. Overdrive flavors include tube, solid-state, clip, and EP amp; and the two multi-effects engines offer tremolo, wah, ring modulator, compressor, phaser, flanger, chorus, delay, and auto pan.

Combinations and favorites

The SKX Pro introduces combinations to the SK series, which allow you to prepare patches from any or all of its four tonal sections, along with your desired performance parameters. You can also assign external MIDI instruments to these combinations. Combinations set you up for each performance and can be changed in an instant. In conjunction with the four allocation buttons in the center of the keyboard, you can call up any part of a combination in real time, giving you the equivalent of four discrete keyboard instruments. In all, 200 combinations are available (100 factory, 100 user). For instant access, any 10 of these may be assigned to the favorites buttons (as on previous SK models). The role of the favorites has been expanded to include 10 banks of favorites, easily called up with a single key stroke.

Gotta Pay to Play

I've wanted the two level hammond feel for a while but I needed other sounds. The skx is covering my needs and wants so far though it does take tweeking and learning to get what I want. The manual only gets you so far but the YT videos make it easier. The piano is almost good enough. With some adjustments or layering, it makes good live sound. The organ is very nice with alot of options. An audiophile will notice the slight difference with the xk5. I think the xk5 has a real tube and with all the features jammed in the skx , there has to be some difference internally with parts that effect tone. The skx sounds slightly compressed I guess. Overall, great instrument. Only negative for me is the price. It was like financing a used car.

An organ for serious organist

I ordered the SKX Pro 2 from Sweet Water, all good service there and things are working well with the organ, thank you Alan Carter. I've read the other reviews: As a church organist I love, love this instrument.
That said, it is an organ and it's unabashedly designed and targeted for organist.
Over the years I've owned different Hammond organs and when I had guest pianist, they never liked my B3 or any organ I've had. If you are a pianist who plays some organ and prefers to use a sustain pedal while doing so, you should look into the Yamaha YC 88, it'll have what a pianist looks for and you can play organ sounds on the piano with it.
If you are are synth player, you should treat yourself and look into the Roland Fantom.
This is an ORGAN, not a synth or a piano. If you are an organist you will love this instrument, after all it is focused toward the things organist use and play. All the tone wheel immalations are spot on.
It has some interesting names for patches like, Emerson, Booker, McGr (I suppose to give you drawbar settings of jazz organist Jimmy McGriff) there is a patch called, Jimmy, for Jimmy Smith drawbar settings.
And there are others similarly named for artist or pop or rock songs that feature those organs.
The strings and brasses are good. And all the other sounds, but the Hammond organs and the Leslie simulations are top notch, really there are none better.
There is a learning curve to the other sounds as well as the organ, and setting them up, but good keyboardist always navigate the sounds through and learn how to combo or layer them, weather you want a B3 in the two manuals with Tubular Bells in the pedal or some other combination you desire, it's all there.
Yes there are better sounding synths, the strings are okay, but remember the focus of this instrument is the organ.
That said, I am a church organist, and I play enuindos during the preaching or as my pastor calls it, Riding the lightning, (church organist know what that means). The drawbars work flawlessly in that function, I push and pull the drawbars while playing most of the time. I have a Hammond XPK 200 L pedal (connected via MIDI,) which works perfectly with the organ and when there's not a bass player on hand I kick pedals to make the bass happen.
If you are a church organist or an organist playing gigs, this instrument is your sweet heart, you can get all your vintage Santana sounds, your Tom Petty, to your Crowded house and beyond, it's all there!
But non organist should buy other instruments that have good organ sounds. The Roland Vr 09 is very light and easy to carry and sounds good for the gigging musician, and has those EPs you're wanting and is quite economical.
I've rarely played the Nord models, I don't care at all for their rocker switches (give me old fashion drawbars every time). But bang for the buck, this organ is what any serious organist will need and desire.
Your other options can be very costly, especially if you are trying to set up a consul organ or grand organ.
The keyboard has that B3 feel to it, so it'll fit the way an organist plays.
Given time to learn it you can do everything you need and desire on this instrument if you are an organist.
The On/Off switch has a timer on it and it's magnetically switched and will shut off if the organ isn't played for a bout ten minutes, so you'll want to store your settings on the user patch settings, partly because it takes a full minute for the organ to restart, kind of like the old two switches on older Hammond models, but this loads data and takes a full minute to reload all the sounds.
The first setting is a B3 through a Leslie 122, it's sweet, also you have to push the on button for the reverb.
There's knobs for overdrive, reverb and settings. My wish list would be a knob for drawbar leakig, but it's there in the settings.

Excellent!

I have an A-102 but I am not able to take it to my place of worship to play and carry it back home every Sunday to practice during the week. This instrument solves that problem as I believe it weighs less than 50 pounds. My A-102 weighs about 380 pounds. The digital leslie is top notch and you have the ability to edit the sound of it with the touch of a button. I would recommend speaking to Yuval as he knows his stuff regarding the kind of stand, bench and expression pedal to get to accompany this amazing hammond keyboard. May God richly bless you!
